Gluten-Free Options for Your Dietary Needs

Dining out when you have dietary restrictions can be difficult. But at Cork Bar & Restaurant, we want to ensure that all of our guests can enjoy a delicious meal.

When you scan our dinner menu, we signify what items are available in a gluten-free variety. Just be sure to tell your server while ordering!

Some of our Cork favorites that can be prepared gluten-free include:

  • Cork Crab Cakes: Jumbo lump crabmeat with Creole mayonnaise, Old Bay seasoning, and pan-fried to golden brown perfection.
  • Stuffed Salmon: Filled with baby spinach, and roasted garlic Boursin cheese mixture, our stuffed salmon is topped with lobster sauce.
  • Braised Beef Short Ribs: Served over classic Gorgonzola Risotto with Marsala sauce, even this can be made without gluten!

When you have dietary restrictions, you know all the lingo and what it means for your body. But if you aren’t familiar with gluten-free dining, here’s an overview. This may come in handy since January 13 is National Gluten-Free Day!

What is Gluten?

The Celiac Disease Foundation defines gluten as, “a general name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and triticale – a cross between wheat and rye. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together.”

Wheat, rye, and barley are the biggest sources of gluten that can actually be present in things we wouldn’t consider–like salad dressing. Some common food items which include gluten are:

  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Cereals
  • Sauces
  • Food coloring
  • Beer

Why go Gluten-Free?

Some individuals opt to go gluten-free for health benefits but for many, it’s a necessity. Three million Americans currently live with celiac disease–many undiagnosed.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that impacts the way the body handles the gluten protein in the digestive tract. Symptoms can vary from person to person, making it hard to diagnose.

Living a gluten-free lifestyle doesn’t cure the disease. But it can help minimize symptoms. But eating gluten-free can be time-consuming and overwhelming, making social events difficult since you may not know what’s in the food.

That’s why we list which of our menu items can be served gluten-free with an icon. Dining out should be an experience–not a stressor.

Celebrate National Gluten-Free Day at Cork!

For those who live a gluten-free lifestyle, every day is a gluten-free day. But this year, reach out to friends, make it a date-night, and try out our gluten-free menu options.
