Finding the perfect bottle of wine is easy; what isn’t so simple is finding snacks that complement it. While people usually pair wine with some cheese and crackers, there are some accompaniments that don’t get the recognition they deserve. Let’s check them out!
Pretzels & White Zinfandel
Pretzels are a simple, yet classic snack…as long as you have a beverage to wash them down with. The best type of wine to pair with this salty treat is something sweet and fruity such as White Zinfandel. This pink-colored wine is made from the Zinfandel wine grape. These grapes traditionally produce a bold and spicy red Zinfandel, but an accident led to the creation of this sweet pink drink that we know and love!
Potato Chips & Pinot Grigio
Our favorite greasy snack (besides French fries) is perfect with a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio. This wine is light, crisp, and sweet, and works well with the saltiness of the chips. As one of the most popular white wines in America, it has quite the backstory. Originally made in France and known as Pinot Gris, the grapes used to make this wine were not green like other white wines’ grapes, but instead were a greyish blue color; these grapes are still used today. It then traveled to Switzerland and eventually to Italy, where it became known as Pinot Grigio.
Hummus & Pinot Noir
Fresh hummus is delicious when served with veggies and naan, a type of pita bread. But adding a glass of Pinot Noir to that spread is a game-changer. Pinot Noir is a light red wine that can be on the dry side. Did you know that Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc are all made from the same grape, just different mutations of it!
Popcorn & Chardonnay
Watching a movie with a big bowl of buttery popcorn but can’t decide what wine to drink with it? We have the answer — Chardonnay! This oakey wine’s flavor matches your snack’s buttery flavor perfectly. Chardonnay is a golden white wine that can have many different flavors depending on how it’s created.
Chocolate & Cabernet Sauvignon
The best type of chocolate to eat with wine is dark chocolate and the best type of wine to eat with dark chocolate is a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc and is known for its bold and rich flavors. This red wine often has a smoky taste to it.
Sweets & Riesling
Many of the other snacks we mentioned were savory and salty. But when it comes to sweets like cupcakes, brownies, or pie, the best type of wine is one that’s equally as sweet — a Riesling. The largest producer of this flowery white wine is Germany; in fact, Riesling is its leading grape variety.
